I was born in a small town in Romania. At 22 years old, I moved to Mexico. Five years later, I saw my dream came true, and I moved to the United States. I am an immigrant. But above all else, I am a proud Romanian. And I will always be. I consider myself lucky for having the opportunity to explore other parts of this world through culture, language, and meaningful experiences.
Some may say that most immigrants have either no home or many homes. I choose to have many homes, and Romania is one of them.
Throughout my journey, I’ve become more aware of the world in which live, and I have come to learn that being different also means being normal. I have gained an appreciation for diversity, and I believe that we all have a unique story to tell.
June is the Immigrant Heritage month, and immigrants across the United States are encouraged to celebrate their culture, share their stories and feel proud of their heritage. Welcome.us started the Immigrant Heritage movement in 2014 encouraging all of us to explore our heritage and recognize our distinct experiences.
You can join the I am an Immigrant movement by sharing your story, your parents’ immigration story or by just passing down your memories to the next generation.
